Loss or theft of identity card

The procedure:

If your Belgian identity card is lost or stolen, you should immediately contact the federal DOCSTOP service on 00800/2123.2123 (free call) or 02/518.21.23 to block the identity documents and prevent fraudulent use.


You then need to make an appointment and go to the population department of your local authority or to the nearest police station.


If you are a foreign national, you must go to the police with 2 photos to obtain a declaration of loss or theft.


What documents should I enclose?

The documents you need to enclose if your identity card is lost or stolen vary depending on the local authority. As a general rule, you should bring


  • A recent passport photo (6 months maximum) complying with ICAO standards
  • A police report
  • A document proving your identity
  • Proof of appointment confirmation
