Obtaining a permanent driving licence

The procedure:

To obtain a permanent driving licence, you need to make an appointment at the counter of the Population Department or online, depending on the commune. The cost and delivery time vary depending on the commune, but you should generally expect to pay between €20 and €40 and wait around 5 working days. When the driving licence is withdrawn, a person authorised by the applicant can collect it by presenting a power of attorney. In general, it is not necessary to make an appointment to collect the licence, but if no-one collects it within approximately 3 months of the order being placed, the driving licence may be destroyed.

The documents required to apply for a full driving licence vary depending on the local authority. As a general rule, the following documents are required

  • A certificate of pass from the test centre
  • Your identity card
  • A recent passport photo (max 6 months old) that complies with ICAO standards
  • The provisional licence
